Living in Key Colony Beach

Key Colony Beach is located in the heart of the Florida Keys, about 1 ½ hour drive from mainland of Florida, and an hour drive to the town of Key West.  The Colony attracts scores of vacationers because of its direct access to the Gulf of Mexico and to the Atlantic Ocean. You can find countless marine activities here – the best fishing and diving areas, snorkeling and scuba diving on the unique coral reefs in Sombrero Reef, and the #1 rated beach in North America, Bahia Honda State Park, is located nearby. My home is in Key Colony Beach and I love living, working, fishing, snorkelling, diving in the waters of Florida Keys.

Key Colony offers a variety of recreational activities.  The Key Colony Beach Golf & Tennis includes a 9-hole golf course and tennis courts and is open to the public.  Other activities are basketball court, bocce ball court, and a horseshoe area.

Key Colony offers several public events throughout the year.  Key Colony Beach Day is a March event, which celebrates the birthday of the city.  Many visitors from all over the Keys enjoy a full day of live music, games, a variety of foods, and more.  Taste of the Islands, also a very popular event, is a fundraiser.  The best restaurants present food samples of their local specialties.  A great taste enjoyment that nicely complements an afternoon of warm sunshine and refreshing ocean breezes! Search Your Vacation Rental Home  Other events are Art in the Park presented by the Art Florida Keys Art Guild, and the Zonta 5K Walk for Women’s Health Awareness.  Call 305-395-0814 for all your real estate needs, wants and ask for Lela.

TRANSPORTATION/AIRPORTS

Getting around the Keys:  Everyone travels by automobile up and down the islands on the famed Overseas Highway, which stretches from Key Largo to Key West.  Travelers also have the option to sit back and let Ambiance Sun's Big Purple Buses luxury coaches carry them to and from Marathon airport and Key West.

Getting to the Keys by ground:  Greyhound Lines has scheduled stops between Miami International Airport and many locations on the Keys. The Keys Shuttle travels between Ft. Lauderdale and Miami International Airport to various towns on the islands.

Air Travel to the Keys: Several major air carriers schedule regular service to both Key West International Airport and Florida Keys Marathon Airport. These include US Airways and Delta, and American Eagle Airlines.  Many flights are routed through the Miami International Airport, although some smaller airlines, such as Cape Air and private charters, schedule direct flights from many major cities in Florida, such as Ft. Meyers, Ft. Lauderdale, Naples, and the Bahamas. International flights must connect to one of these airlines in Miami.

Marathon Airport began as a World War II airstrip and now is a convenient destination for both commercial and private planes.  Located in the middle of the island chain Marathon Airport is an hour away from either Key West (south) or Key Largo (north), making it a popular travel choice for travelers.

Traveling by water:  The Key West Express provides passenger ferry service from Ft. Myers Beach and Marco Island on Florida's southwest coast to the Key West Bight Ferry Terminal.  It’s about 3.5 hours of refreshing breezes and sun.  For private boaters be sure to reserve your space in the numerous marinas that dot the coastal inlands.

ABOUT EDUCATION

Students who live on the Keys are served by the Monroe County Schools.   Randy Acevedo, Superintendent of Monroe County Schools, is quoted: Together, as a team, we will support our vision - “that all students succeed in academic, artistic and athletic endeavors” and “that every employee is appreciated, highly qualified, an effective communicator, and improves continuously to meet emerging needs of students.”

There are three high schools: Coral Shores (Tavernier), Key West (Key West), and Marathon High School (Marathon); one Middle School; and five Elementary Schools throughout the area.  Monroe County offers many other educational services as well:  Hurricane Island Outward Bound, Montessori Elementary Charter School, and Big Pine Neighborhood Charter School are just a few.

Real Estate Tips

Animal House >Dog Houses

A family pet often represents a major challenge when a house is being marketed. Your family may call your large dog "Fido"--but your real estate agent calls him "Fang"! This is a sensitive issue for a real estate agent to communicate to sellers.

Even though he is just doing "his job", a dog's bark will sound ferocious to anyone who is knocking at the door. This is usually a good thing, but when your home is on the market, real estate agents will be bringing a lot of strangers to the door. Most agents are concerned about the unpredictability of dogs they don't know. When they are greeted by a barking dog, they may not be willing to enter the house unless the owner is at home. If your dog is confined to part of the house, such as a basement, be sure to put up a sign informing people of that fact. Talk with your real estate agent about the best way to manage your pet while your house is being shown, and make sure that this information is included in the MLS listing.
